ITG (Imperial) Brands hired Holland & Knight LLP earlier this year for a sum of 60,000 USD to lobby on the issue of tobacco. The bills in question are HR 2786 the Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2021 and Senate bill 411 Mother’s and Offspring Mortality and Morbidity Awareness Act (also known as MOMMA’s Act). HR 2786 was introduced to the House in April of last year and ultimately increases the excise tax on cigarettes and equalizes that tax rates among other tobacco products. Specifically, a new subsection decries that any other tobacco products not explicitly mentioned prior are to be taxed at a rate equivalent to that used to tax cigarettes. These amounts shall also be adjusted for inflation. S 411 establishes programs and requirements to reduce maternal mortality and increase the federal tobacco tax to equalize the taxation of different products. Maternal mortality has increased from 14.5 percent in 2000 to 17.3 percent in 2017, making the United States the only industrialized nation state with a rising mortality rate. The Center for Disease Controls estimates that up to sixty percent of these deaths are preventable. The CDC also notes that intimate parter violence is the leading cause of maternal death and that non-Hispanic Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy and maternity retailed causes.

In a study released in March of this year it was found that increased taxation on cigarettes and tobacco products reduced neonatal and infant mortality. The World Health Organization recommends a tax rate of at least 75%.

Holland and Knight LLP have been hired by 283 clients just this year for a sum of approximately 20,780,000 USD. They’ve represented various industries from education to homeland security, but by and large their company represents issues concerning federal budgets and appropriations.  Kathryn Lehman has worked on at least fifteen cases this year with Holland and Knight LLP and has represented such companies as CrossFit Inc., Amscot Financial, and Zovio. To this point, Holland and Knight LLP have spent 390,000 USD in 2022 on lobbying expenses.

A Lobbying Data Pro plan is also available for purchase that connects lobbying contracts to stock market tickers providing an innovative source of alternative data completely new to the market. It has already been used in many applications, from academic research to quantitative finance, trading, and equity research.

There are five lobbyists working on this contract, all of which have prior government experience. In the context of lobbying data, these lobbyists have submitted their “covered positions” publicly in the lobbying report.

Founder, Neil Bhatia, has big plans for LobbyingData’s future, including a historical database to uncover company actions in lobbying from 1999 to present day. LobbyingData continues to find new ways to provide accessibility and transparency into the lobbying industry.
