How investors and researchers put lobbying data to work, with the fields each approach relies on.

Quant
Rank companies by how much they spend, on what and through whom, and rebalance each quarter as new reports arrive.
Typical approach. Sum spending by ticker and quarter, measure the change, rank within each sector and compare with subsequent returns.
Event-driven
Find the companies with money riding on a particular bill, rule or budget line before the decision is taken.
Typical approach. List the bills each company lobbied on, weight them by spending and set them against the legislative calendar.
Discretionary, quantamental
A company’s full record in Washington: what it spent, on which issues, with which agencies and through which firms, set beside its rivals.
Typical approach. Select the company and its peers, compare their issues and agencies over time, and read what they say they are lobbying for.
Macro
Follow the money spent on AI, chips, energy, defense or health care from one administration and Congress to the next.
Typical approach. Add up spending by issue and agency across all lobbyists, listed and private, quarter by quarter.
Risk, long-only
Gauge how exposed each holding, and the portfolio as a whole, is to the next turn in policy.
Typical approach. Match holdings by ticker, score their exposure by issue and agency, and flag concentrations ahead of known votes.
Data science, AI
A clean, well-documented record for models to learn from and for research agents to consult.
Typical approach. Give agents the delivered files as a source, index the issue descriptions and bill titles for search, and train models on spending, issues and agencies, aligned to the date each filing became public.
Private equity, credit
The Washington dealings of private companies, which disclose little else, including their reliance on government money.
Typical approach. Look up the target and its affiliates, then review their issues, agencies and any foreign interests.
