The dataset

Every lobbying filing since 1999, in a single, consistent format: who paid, how much, to whom, on which bills and agencies, and the ticker each company traded under at the time.

What each record holds

How we build the dataset

The steps from raw government filings to the finished dataset.

CollectionEvery new filing is captured as soon as it is published and checked for completeness.
CodingBills are identified by number and title; issues and agencies are coded to the government’s own lists.
Matching companiesA company that files as “Acme Inc” one year and “Acme Holdings” the next is recognized as the same company, as are its subsidiaries.
Matching tickersListed companies are matched to the ticker they used in each year, through renamings, mergers and delistings.
Quality checksThe results are checked against the original filings before release, and each record keeps a link to its source.
